Scanner is a free storage management utility that can scan a user’s local storage and display the results as a visual flowchart of directories sorted by their size. This app uses a flashy presentation of a multi-level pie chart to enable users to quickly analyze their hard drive and locate suspiciously large directories that may contain files that can be safely deleted.
The Scanner app has a simplistic and easy-to-understand graphic and tools user interface. The center of the app displays a large multi-colored pie chart of the scanned hard drive that is fully interactive and can identify the location and size of each selected directory. The left side of the app has a column of icons representing all of the detected storage drives, including local hard drives, optical drives, USB storage, and network storage locations. The app also has a few more tools for deleting the selected directory, viewing a summary of scanned files, and a refresh button, but no customization tools.
Although Scanner is limited in its functionality compared to other modern storage utility apps, it can still be valuable to users who want a quick and easy scan of their storage locations to visually spot directories that have grown too large. One of the unique features of this software is that it is fully compatible with legacy versions of Windows OS.
